Reliability FreshNSure test confirmed by KOB and the UvA

NSure is continuously monitoring and optimizing the quality of its products, including the FreshNSure test. The FreshNSure test can be used to determine whether a batch of apples or pears has been treated with 1-MCP. Last season, NSure performed trials in collaboration with the German research center Kompetentzzentrum Obstbau-Bodensee (KOB). Main purpose was to determine whether the FreshNSure test can also be used under Dynamic Controlled Atmosphere (DCA) storage conditions.

In total 40 batches of organic Gala apples, either 1-MCP-treated or untreated control batches, were stored under DCA or Ultra Low Oxygen (ULO) conditions. All batches were analysed using the FreshNSure test after 6 months of storage. All 1-MCP-treated batches could be clearly distinguished from untreated fruit using the FreshNSure index (Figure 1). No significant differences between fruit stored under ULO or DCA conditions were found.

Figure 1: Fruit treated with 1-MCP can be clearly distinguished from untreated fruit stored under either ULO or DCA conditions. Per treatment, 10 batches of fruit were evaluated. Batches were treated with 1-MCP shortly after harvest and stored for 6 months.

Reliability of the FreshNSure test has been assessed by Dr. Emiel van Loon of the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) of the University of Amsterdam.
Based on these results, we can state that the overall classification accuracy of, for example, the test for Abate pears is 98%. According to the “rules of statistics” it should be added that this is based on 107 test cases. In the table below, the accuracy of the FreshNSure test for several different apple and pear varieties can be found.

Based on these results, NSure is confident that the FreshNSure test can be used reliably for apples and pears.
